The India Brief

Sun | 25 January 2026

Good morning, India! It’s January 25th, the calm before the parade. While Delhi is turning into a fortress for Republic Day, we’ve curated a massive dossier for you today.

🇮🇳 The India Brief

Category: Geopolitics & Policy

🇪🇺 The EU Power Duo Lands in Delhi

  • 🇪🇺 VIP Arrivals: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa have landed in New Delhi as Chief Guests for the 77th Republic Day.
  • 🤝 Trade Pivot: The visit aims to finalise the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, described by Brussels as the "Mother of All Deals" to diversify supply chains away from China.
  • 🛡️ Security Pact: A new Security and Defence Partnership is on the table, signalling a strategic shift to reduce India's reliance on Russian military hardware.
The Take: Bringing the EU’s top brass for R-Day is a calculated hedge. With the US turning protectionist and China hostile, India is betting big on Brussels. This isn't just about parades; it's about securing a trade lifeline for the next decade. Link

🛢️ US Hints at Tariff Rollback

  • 🇺🇸 Bessent's Signal: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested a "path" to remove the punitive 25% tariffs on India, citing a "collapse" in India's Russian oil imports.
  • 📉 Oil Data: While the US claims victory, data suggests India's shift is market-driven due to shrinking discounts on Russian crude, not just American pressure.
  • 🗣️ "Good Boy" Diplomacy: Bessent framed the potential rollback as a reward for India "gearing down" its ties with Moscow, a face-saving exit for Washington.
The Take: The US needs India against China too much to keep these tariffs forever. Bessent is inventing a "victory" (India stopping Russian oil) to justify lowering duties that are hurting US consumers. It’s classic transactional diplomacy. Link

🚫 India Rejects US SEC Summons for Adani

  • ⚖️ Return to Sender: The Law Ministry refused to serve US SEC summons to Gautam and Sagar Adani for the second time, citing "technical deficiencies" like missing official seals.
  • 📜 Legal Stand: India argues the request did not comply with the Hague Convention, asserting sovereignty over how legal papers are served to its citizens.
  • 📧 Email Workaround: Frustrated, the US SEC is now petitioning a New York court to bypass New Delhi and serve the summons directly via email.
The Take: We, Indians, want to follow rules to the T? Well, the US is finding out about our government delays, or is this to protect some? Link

🚢 Adani Ports' ₹30,000 Cr Vizhinjam Bet

  • 🏗️ Phase 2 Launch: Adani Ports announced a massive ₹30,000 crore investment to expand the Vizhinjam International Seaport, aiming for 5.7 million TEUs capacity by 2029.
  • ⚓ Transshipment Hub: The goal is to capture transshipment traffic currently lost to Colombo and Singapore, leveraging the port's deep draft for mega vessels.
  • 🤝 Political Buy-in: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the phase, signalling rare alignment between the Left government and the corporate giant on infrastructure.
The Take: Vizhinjam is India’s bid to reclaim its maritime geography. By handling mother ships directly, India saves billions in forex. Adani is doubling down, betting that infrastructure dominance is the best defence against political or legal headwinds. Link

🦄 Juspay Becomes 2026's First Unicorn

  • 💰 Funding Win: Payments startup Juspay raised $50 million from WestBridge Capital, hitting a valuation of $1.2 billion.
  • 📈 Tech Resilience: This marks the first Indian unicorn of 2026.
  • 📱 Stack Dominance: Juspay powers payments for giants like Amazon and Swiggy, processing millions of transactions daily with high reliability.
The Take: The funding winter might be thawing. Juspay’s success proves that unit economics and infrastructure plays still attract capital. It sets a positive tone for the Indian startup ecosystem heading into the new fiscal year. Link

Category: Regional & States

🦠 Kerala Declares 'State Microbe'

  • 🔬 Bacterial Pride: Kerala became the first state to declare Bacillus subtilis as its "State Microbe" to promote scientific temper.
  • 🧬 Microbiome Hub: CM Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated a Centre of Excellence in Microbiome to lead research in gut health and biotechnology.
  • 🥛 Probiotic Power: The bacterium is common in fermented foods and soil, symbolising the link between traditional diet and modern health.
The Take: Only in Kerala! Declaring a state microbe is a quirky but brilliant move to highlight biotechnology. It signals the state's intent to move beyond tourism and remittances into high-end life sciences and R&D. Link

🤝 Assam-Mizoram Border Talks Resumed

  • 🕊️ Back on Track: Officials from Assam and Mizoram have resumed correspondence to fix a date for the next round of border dispute talks.
  • 📄 Long Freeze: Negotiations had stalled for nearly a year; the thaw is essential to prevent a recurrence of the violent clashes from previous years.
  • 👮 Security Calm: While talks are slow, the situation on the ground remains peaceful, with central forces maintaining the status quo.
The Take: Silence on the border is good, but a treaty is better. Resuming talks shows political will from both CMs to resolve the "seven sisters" infighting, which is crucial for the success of the Act East policy. Link

🌍 World Watch

🇨🇳🐼 China-Japan: The Panda Exit

  • 🛫 Farewell: Japan is sending its last Pandas, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, back to China, marking the end of 50 years of "Panda Diplomacy".
  • 🛑 Travel Ban: Beijing issued a travel advisory against Japan, weaponising tourism over Tokyo’s support for Taiwan.
The Take: Beijing is signalling that access to its culture and market is conditional. Tokyo is standing firm on Taiwan, so expect a colder peace in East Asia. Link

🇺🇸🇨🇦 Trump’s Northern Threat

  • 📢 100% Tariffs: President Trump threatened 100% tariffs on Canada if it becomes a "backdoor" for Chinese goods into the US.
  • 🚗 Trade War: The threat targets Chinese EVs and steel potentially transshipping through Canada, putting the USMCA trade deal at risk.
The Take: Trump treats allies like tenants. Threatening Canada with 100% tariffs is economic suicide for both, but it forces Trudeau to pick a side: the US market or Chinese investment. He can't have both. Link

🇺🇬 The Raid on Bobi Wine

  • 🔫 House Raid: Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine claimed soldiers raided his home, assaulting his wife and holding her at gunpoint.
  • 🗳️ Post-Election: The raid follows a disputed election where Museveni extended his decades-long rule amid fraud allegations.
  • 🌍 Global Silence: Wine appealed to the UN, but international response has been muted due to distractions in Gaza and Ukraine.
The Take: Dictators thrive in the dark. With the world looking away, Museveni is crushing dissent with brute force. It’s a tragic, familiar pattern in Ugandan politics that leaves the opposition with no safe harbour. Link

🇮🇱🇵🇸 UAE Funding "Gaza Community"

  • 🏗️ Rebuilding Rafah: The UAE plans to fund a "planned community" in Rafah (south Gaza), contingent on biometric security vetting for residents.
  • 👮 Security First: The project is part of a US-led "Board of Peace" plan, prioritising Israeli security demands over Palestinian sovereignty.
  • ⚖️ Genocide Vote: Meanwhile, the Arab Parliament voted to legally classify Israeli actions as genocide, highlighting the split between Arab streets and rulers.
The Take: Aid with handcuffs. A "planned community" with biometric gates sounds less like a home and more like an open-air prison. The UAE is writing the checks, but Israel is writing the rules of engagement. Link

🧘 The Deep Dive: Vizhinjam Port

⚓ The Vizhinjam Voyager: Why India’s New Super-Port Scares Colombo

Deep on the southern tip of Kerala, just 16 kilometers from the Trivandrum airport, something massive is rising from the sea. It’s not just concrete and steel; it’s a geopolitical chess move worth ₹30,000 crore. The Vizhinjam International Seaport has officially launched its Phase 2 expansion, and for the first time in history, India has a port that can look Singapore and Colombo in the eye and say, "We'll take it from here."

The Geography of Money: In the shipping world, "draft" is destiny. Draft is the depth of the water at the berth. Most Indian ports have a draft of 12-15 meters. The biggest ships in the world, the "Megamax" class monsters carrying 20,000+ containers, need 18 meters or more. Because India didn't have this, these giant "mother ships" would dock in Colombo (Sri Lanka) or Dubai. Smaller "feeder vessels" would then ferry the goods to Mumbai or Chennai. This double-handling costs Indian exporters millions and adds days to delivery times. Enter Vizhinjam: It has a natural draft of 18 meters, scalable to 20 meters. It sits just 10 nautical miles from the main East-West international shipping route. It’s the maritime equivalent of building a highway toll booth right next to the busiest interstate in the world.

The Adani Play: Adani Ports (APSEZ) isn't just building a dock; they are building a monopoly. With a cumulative investment of ₹30,000 crore, they aim to boost capacity to 5.7 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) by 2029. By controlling Vizhinjam, Adani effectively controls the gateway to the Indian subcontinent. If you are Maersk or MSC, and you want to drop cargo for India, you no longer need to pay fees to Sri Lanka. You can drop it directly in Kerala. This keeps the forex in India and gives New Delhi strategic leverage over its own supply chains.

What's Next? Phase 2 is now live. But a port is useless without connections. The focus now shifts to the "hinterland connectivity", specifically, the 10.7 km rail link to Balaramapuram and the widening of NH-66. The dream is to turn Vizhinjam into a "logistics city" like Jebel Ali in Dubai. It has faced years of protests from local fishermen and environmental concerns, but with the Phase 2 launch, the political will is clear: The ships are coming, and they are coming to Kerala.

👋 Sign-Off

Question of the Day: If Kerala has a "State Microbe," what should be the "State Symbol" of Bengaluru? (My vote: The 'Traffic Jam' or the 'Sold Out' Linkin Park ticket).

See you on Republic Day! Aditya S.
